Mangaran Mabujunu – Getting Really Good
Literacy Support at Cable Beach Primary
At Cable Beach Primary, we understand that strong reading skills are essential not only for doing well in school but also for succeeding in life beyond the classroom. To make sure every student gets the support they need to improve their literacy, we have tailored programs in place.
PP to Year 2:
For younger students, we run “catch-up” sessions focused on helping with reading and spelling. These sessions are in small groups so that each student gets more individual attention. The sessions take place during regular class time, alongside the usual Reading and Spelling lessons. Our Educational Assistants and English Support teacher lead these groups. Students are selected for these sessions based on their literacy data, which helps us decide exactly where they need extra help. The groups are flexible and may change from week to week, depending on which students need the most support at the time. We track progress closely to make sure each student is improving and getting the help they need to build confidence in reading.
Years 3 to 6:
For older students, we have the Reading Mastery program. This program is designed to give more focused support to students who need to strengthen their reading skills. It helps build confidence in reading by giving students the tools and strategies they need to succeed. The goal of this program is to help students reach their full potential in literacy, ensuring that they have the skills needed to excel in both their current classes and in the future. Just like with the younger years, progress is monitored regularly, so we can make sure the students are improving and getting the support they need.
Through these programs, we aim to ensure that every student at Cable Beach Primary gets the help they need to become confident and successful readers.
Literacy Extension Programs at Cable Beach Primary
At Cable Beach Primary, we believe in providing opportunities for students to extend their learning beyond the classroom. Our extension programs are designed to help students develop new skills, challenge themselves, and explore their interests in a supportive environment.
Debate Club
Our Debate Club runs on Monday afternoons after school and is open to students who are interested in developing their public speaking and critical thinking skills. In this program, students learn how to construct a strong argument, use supporting evidence respectfully, and create counterarguments. They also work in teams to plan and develop their debates, fostering teamwork and cooperation. Throughout the year, students will have the chance to participate in debates, showcasing the skills they’ve learned and gaining experience in public speaking and respectful discussion. Debate Club provides an exciting and challenging way for students to enhance their communication skills while engaging in thought-provoking conversations.
Lunch Time Reading Groups
Our Lunch Time Reading Groups provide students who love reading with the chance to share their thoughts and ideas with their peers. Each group selects a book to read together, and students are required to read a set number of chapters each week. Once a week, during lunchtime, students gather to discuss the chapters they’ve read, share their opinions, and explore the book’s themes, characters, and plot. This program encourages a love of reading while developing critical thinking, communication, and teamwork skills. It’s a fun and interactive way for students to engage with books and connect with others who share similar interests.
Numeracy Support at Cable Beach Primary School
Cable Beach Primary School is dedicated to developing critical, resilient and curious mathematical thinkers. Proficient Place Value skills are essential for students to have a robust and thorough foundation to learn across all areas of maths. Students who are lacking Place Value skills are supported in the personalised Mangaran Mabujunu, ‘Getting Really Good’, program. Students’ individual needs are targeted through explicit teaching of the Place Value aspects they require knowledge, skills and practice. Hands-on, engaging activities provide understanding and practice in the target areas. Engagement in this program is based on student data which is used to teach, monitor and track student participation and development across a term. Data is collected, analysed and reviewed each term to ensure students who are most in need receive the required support.
